Online shopping in the social age

You probably never thought about it before. You probably never even noticed it before. Next time you log yourself into Facebook, glance over to the sidebars. When you go to tweet, read the last 10 tweets. Even Gmail and Hotmail have started doing it too. On nearly every website that connects you to somebody else, you will notice free classifieds specifically tailored to your interests. Creepy, huh?

You never think about how much of your information is available on these social websites. But every page you “like” on Facebook and every person you “follow” on Twitter is recorded. With the few clicks you made to follow a company or like a brand, advertisers are able to post similar advertisements for free on your account. And even through email conversations, key words are tracked. So if you recommended a product or a job online to a friend or discussed a place to celebrate your birthday, these keywords are tracked in the same way they are with Facebook and Twitter and recommendations are made directly on your account page.

Incredible, isn’t it? Think about it the next time you enter Google, Facebook or Twitter!
